Democrats urge Obama to be ready to bypass Congress on debt cap

By Rachelle Younglai and Richard Cowan | Reuters
01-11-2013

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Top Democratic senators urged President Barack Obama on Friday to be ready to raise the debt ceiling without congressional approval in order to avert a damaging debt default.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his leadership team said Obama should use “any lawful steps” under his authority to “ensure that America does not break its promises and trigger a global economic crisis.”

They urged Obama to act on his own if Republicans insist on a debt limit extension that is coupled with “unbalanced or unreasonable” spending cuts.

Democrats are anticipating another possible deadlock over the debt limit in Congress and hope a unilateral move, or the threat of one, by Obama would avoid a replay of the 2011 fight that pushed the country to the brink of default.

Obama has vowed not to negotiate with Republicans on the debt ceiling.

Republican reaction to Reid’s letter showed no willingness to back down from their demands that spending cuts be part of the debt limit debate.

“The Democrat leadership hiding under their desks and hoping the president will find a way around the law on the nation’s maxed-out credit card is not only the height of irresponsibility, but also a guarantee that our national debt crisis will only get worse,” said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

Michael Steel, a spokesman for House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, said, “The American people will not tolerate an increase in the debt limit without spending cuts and reforms.”

Some analysts and Democrats believe the 14th Amendment of the Constitution gives the president the authority to raise the $16.4 trillion debt ceiling unilaterally.

That provision states the validity of government debt shall not be questioned. But the White House has so far ruled it out. One Senate Democratic aide said other legal options were being explored.

The U.S. Treasury is shuffling funds around to continue paying government bills. Those accounting maneuvers are due to run their course around mid-February.

“We believe that you must make clear that you will never allow our nation’s economy and reputation to be held hostage,” said the letter, signed by Reid and the three other leading Senate Democrats.

Republicans have said they will only approve a debt ceiling increase if it is accompanied by spending cuts and changes to big government programs Social Security and Medicare.

The Democratic leaders agreed that the borrowing cap increase should be separate from a deficit reduction plan. They said any fiscal deal should include spending cuts as well as additional revenue from the wealthy and the elimination of certain tax breaks.

Obama, top foe clash as US debt talks flare up

AFPBy Olivier Knox
07-13-2011

Bush To Obama, Next a Depression

President Barack Obama clashed sharply with a top Republican foe as tense talks to avert a ruinous early August US debt default flared up amid grim warnings about the global consequences.

US central bank chief Ben Bernanke said a default would plunge the economy into “major crisis,” while ratings agency Moody’s warned the United States may lose its sterling triple-A debt rating on rising risks of a short-term default.

Default would “throw shockwaves through the entire global financial system,” and risk sending the fragile US economy into a new recession, the US Federal Reserve chairman told a key congressional committee. Continue reading

WHAT have we LEARNED from the PAST (Part 4)

By Bob L.

Inserts from the Democratic Party. Read the rest.President John F Kennedy did have some of it right, but failed to see that if you dwell on the future and not think about the past you will repeat your past, this is proof of what is happening today, and will 2029 be a repeat 1929 (could it be something big) One Hundred Years Cycle. (So they say History Repeats its self.)[Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. — President John F. Kennedy!]

I Got A Job, Free Medical, And A Big Plane, What Are You whining About

As this says, they have for Two Hundred Years been working for hard-working families, but does any one remember here lately that they bailed out the Rich, and the Reckless speculators with your money and left you with out a job, let alone call you unspeakable names.

They also say, they don’t let the most influential write their own rules, what do you call all the perks they receive from the lobbyist.

The Democratic Party: 1800-1828  And today they are trying to rewrite the Constitution to help themselves.

[For more than 200 years, Democrats have represented the interests of working families, fighting for equal opportunities and justice for all Americans.

Our party was founded on the conviction that wealth and privilege shouldn’t be an entitlement to rule and the belief that the values of hardworking families are the values that should guide us.

We didn’t become the most prosperous country in the world by rewarding greed and recklessness or by letting those with the most influence write their own rules. We got here by rewarding hard work and responsibility, by investing in people, and by growing our country from the bottom up.

Today Democrats are fighting to repair a decade of damage and grow an economy based on the values of Main Street, not greed and reckless speculation. Democrats are focused on rescuing our economy not just in the short run but also rebuilding our economy for the long run—an economy that lifts up not just some Americans, but all Americans.]

Did I Do That

Democrats have a long and proud history of fighting for voting rights that continues to this day, and the Democratic National Committee is dedicated to ensuring that every voter has the information necessary to exercise his or her right to vote. The Voting Rights Institute works to give guidance and leadership on a variety of voting rights and election administration laws and polices, as well as voter protection and voter education information.

We can’t blame every thing on just one person, WE are all responsible for the problems of this Country and its problems, we started slavery, we all are racist, from the President, all the way down to where a child is born, and then after, when will people get over it.

(Government) Give Me All Your Money Then We Will Talk About A Job

I guess as long as the government keeps raising taxes, ALL LEGAL Americans will remain as SLAVES to the Wealthy and the Government.

When you get down to it, the Republicans are not Angles ether.

Pelosi says she’s ‘proud’ of Wisconsin Democrats who fled

Comment By Bob L.
02/19/2011

This shows just what Democrats have become, Dictators like Hitler, and Castro, they don’t want to see this Country stay under one Government and Constitution, they are looking for a ONE WORLD CONTROL.

This is funny, the Democrats are complaining about the same thing that they were doing, now the shoe is on the other foot, and they don’t like it.

LOOK at it this way YOU ELECTED THEM TO CONTROL SPENDING, NOW GET RID OF THEM IF THEY WON’T DO THEIR JOB THAT THEY WERE ELECTED TO DO, no one said it was easy, and no one said you would make friends when you took office, this goes to every Government Agency, if they won’t do their Job, CAN THEM, BECAUSE THEY ARE NOTHING BUT COWARDS AND WILL NEVER DO THE RIGHT THING. If they are not there when it comes to the floor for a vote, go on without them, that is what they did in D.C., they went behind closed doors and voted with out the Republicans there, they even bribed the ones who were with the Republicans to vote with them.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she supports the Democratic state senators in Wisconsin who left the state to stop a vote on curbing collective bargaining rights for unionized public employees.

After earlier voicing solidarity with the workers protesting against Gov. Scott Walker (R) in Wisconsin, Pelosi told The Hill she also stands behind the state legislators who fled and are now reportedly being sought by police.

“I saw some of them speak on TV, and they were very proud of the action that they took. I’m very proud of what they are doing,” she said. “They’re standing up for the rights of America’s workingmen and -women to have a voice at the table about their jobs and their futures, so yes, I support them.”

But whether House Democrats would ever leave Washington to hold up legislation in Congress is another matter.

Pelosi laughed off a question about whether she would ever lead House Democrats out of the capital in protest of the Republican majority. “Would we have to go to another country?” she quipped. “We’re national.”

The Democratic senators in Wisconsin left to deny Republicans a quorum to hold a vote on the contested legislation. In Washington, House Democrats have railed against the GOP’s proposed budget cuts, but they have a Democratic Senate majority and President Obama as a backstop.

President Obama’s latest recess appointment is a corporate lawyer, hailing from a leading Democratic lobbying firm where he represented defense contractors and health care companies.

The nomination of James M. Cole, now deputy attorney general, never made it to the Senate floor thanks to questions about his time as a compliance monitor at AIG, and his views on fighting terrorism. Continue reading

Reid’s Rules Scheme To Rewrite Defeat

By Bob L.

Here we go again, they just had to put Reid back in, (so the people who put him back in will get their just dessert) so now the Democrats with Pelosi and Obama with his Czars are doing the same thing that they did with every thing else, hide behind closed doors (pass laws without reading them) and say that the Republicans don’t want to work with them, so now they are back to scheming for ways to go against all Americans and Republicans to make sure that America will no longer be free.

Reid should be recalled and thrown out on his BUTT!!!!!

The Democrats are trying to change the Senate rules so that they can ram through their agenda when their majority shrinks next week from 59 to 53 seats.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has been scheming behind closed doors to use his slim majority to vote on January 5 for the most drastic rules changes since 1975.

“Democrats lost the election. Their power has been weakened significantly. So they are trying to do a Washington-insider tactic to try to grab power, Continue reading

Obama warns of imminent tax increase if Dems don’t give in

By Bob L.

This is true to a point, but the tax should be $500,000 dollars not $250,000 dollars because this puts small business right in the cross hairs of any thing that comes along, but money should be put back into the business, not in their pockets.

Look at what is happening to large companies, they are putting so much money into paying Executives outrageous wages, they can’t see that these companies are no longer profitable for any one, they are a died horse that will never survive until they take all that money and put it back into the company, lower their prices so people can buy their product, PEOPLE BUY EVERY ONE PROFITS, price people out, every one loses.

Fear of GOP takeover forces unions to back Dems critical of health

By Bob L.

Unions are not for workers because they say who will join and who will not, see if they let you join you will be allowed to join and pay dews, then they will blackball you and you will not work, but you will still paying union dews.

If the Democrats lose then they will lose their power they have under the Obama Administration, good example of the intimidation at these town hall meeting around the Country where you saw SEIU shirts that were in the crowds.

Unions are great for protecting working people from scruples Companies, but they were not the people who the American people voted in to office to run this Country and should not be allowed tell our Government how to run this Country, this go’s for any other Organizations because in most cases they are not doing for the good of Americans, they are only doing it for more power where people don’t have a choice, it is join the union or you don’t work, and this then is not a free Country, it makes this a Police Country, or under a DICTATOR.

Fears that John Boehner will become the next Speaker of the House have prompted unions to rethink their opposition to Democrats who voted against the healthcare reform bill earlier this year.

The AFL-CIO released its first round of mailers in support of endangered Democrats this week. In it, the union sought to bolster Rep. Zack Space’s (D-Ohio) campaign with literature attacking his Republican opponent. Continue reading
